The adventure to Kanchenjunga begins with a picturesque flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. We will collect you from the hotel in the morning and transfer you to the domestic airport in Kathmandu. The scenic flight, lasting 45 minutes, transports you from Kathmandu to the Bhadrapur airport. While departing from Kathmandu, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a picturesque vista of varying terrains.
Upon arrival at Bhadrapur airport, you will proceed towards either Fiddim or Taplejung (1820m) for your next destination. Normally, we take a comfortable Jeep drive to Taplejung. While driving up to Taplejung, you will experience the refreshing mountain air, signaling the beginning of the unforgettable trek to Kanchenjunga’s north base camp. Birtamod, Illam, Jorpokhari, and Amarpur are charming villages located in the valley on the way to Taplejung.
You will eat breakfast at the hotel in Kathmandu, have lunch in Bhadrapur, and then enjoy dinner and stay overnight at the Hotel in Taplejung.
Following a tasty breakfast at the Taplejung Hotel, you will depart for your next stop, Sekathum. Driving away from Taplejung, you will pass through a narrow, meandering road with the soundtrack of chirping birds. You will journey through a dense forest and tiny villages, offering a peek into traditional homes and the lifestyle of the locals.
While traveling to Sekathum, you will come across the Kanchenjunga conservation area checkpoint, where you must present your permit in order to proceed with your trip. The journey to Sekathum involves following the Tamor River and crossing various bridges. It takes approximately 6-7 hours to drive from Taplekung to Sekathum, located at an altitude of 1576m. You will spend the night at a hotel in Sekathum.
Your trekking adventure starts by enjoying breakfast at Sekathum Hotel before starting your ascent to Amjilosa. Ascending to Amjilosa involves a gain in elevation, making the trek from Sekathum to Amjilosa one of the most exciting parts of the journey. Before arriving at Amjilosa, you will traverse the rhododendron forest next to the Gunsa Khola river initially, and then the Thotane Khola before reaching your destination.
After a steep uphill and downhill trek on rocky trails, and a crossing of a suspension bridge over the Gunsa River, you will arrive at Amjilosa (2308m) after 4-6 hours of walking. You will spend one night at the Hotel of Amjilosa.
You will depart from Amjilosa and embark on another incredible journey towards Gyabla. Following breakfast at Amjilosa Hotel, you will begin your hike. The path leading to Gyabla is tough but satisfying. The journey involved trekking through a stunning Kanchenjunga conservation area, where you’ll see exceptional plant and animal life. There is the possibility of encountering a red panda while walking as well.
Crossing the suspension bridge twice over the Gunsa River will lead you to Kanchenjunga base camp on the route to Gyabla. It will take you around 4-5 hours of hiking to reach Gyabla (Kyapra) which is located at an elevation of 2730m. You will be lodging at Gyabla’s tea house for the night.
Once you finish breakfast and enjoy the stunning scenery of Gyabla, you will head towards Ghunsa village. The path of the trail meanders through a dense forest filled with rhododendrons and ancient oak trees. The route from Gyabla to Gunsa includes different types of terrain such as steep inclines and declines as well as navigating through small pathways. Simultaneously, the flowing waterfalls and snowy mountain tops will enhance your hike and help you to overlook any obstacles.
Walking for 4-5 hours will lead you to Ghunsa, a charming village famous for its Tibetan traditions and warm welcome. Before reaching Ghunsa, you will travel through Phale (Phere), a tiny village famous for its carpet weaving factory. Starting from Phela, the trail splits into two directions: one leading to Nango La (4776 m) and the other taking you to Ghunsa (3595m).
You will be staying overnight at the Dzonga family house lodge. The lodge offers amenities such as a private bathroom, onsite bakery, and coffee bar.
Day six is reserved for exploring Gunsa Village. This day will be spent discovering Ghunsa village. The primary goal of including the day is to adjust to the new surroundings and elevation.
Throughout the day, you have the opportunity to visit nearby ridges and take in the stunning views of Kumbhakarna Peak (Januu Peak). Also, you have the opportunity to engage with residents and understand their culture, customs, and lifestyle. Additionally, you have the opportunity to explore ancient Buddhist monasteries and gain knowledge of traditional customs.
Following a delightful breakfast and day of getting accustomed to the altitude in Ghunsa, you will eagerly progress towards Khambachen. Heading north from Ghunsa, you will stroll next to the Ghunsa Khola river. You will also stroll through the forest of rhododendrons and pine trees. The colorful prayer wheels on the chortens and mani walls add to the beauty of your hike.
Mount Jannu (7710m), Sobithongie (6670m), Phole Peak (6645m), Khabur (6332m), Temachungi(6305m.|20685ft.), and Pholesobi Thongje(6652m) will accompany you during the journey from Ghunsa to Khambachen. It is possible to reach Khambachen at an altitude of 4050m by trekking for 4-6 hours. Prior to reaching Khambachen, you will be able to observe a beautiful Kumbhakarna glacier located under Khambachen village. You will spend the night at the tea house in Khambachen.
In order to improve your trekking experience at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, we have included the Jannu viewpoint hike as an optional side trek. You will hike to the Jannu viewpoint on the eighth day if you opt for a side hike. If you don’t understand the perspective, we will relocate to Lhonak.
Jannu, also called Faktanglung, is situated at 4420m altitude and is found at the base of Mt. Jannu. Jannu, also known as Mount Kumbakarna. Following breakfast in Khambachen, you will embark on a brief trek to the lookout point. The perspective is a sacred spot well-known to the Kirat community.
The Janu viewpoint provides stunning views of Mount Jannu, Kumbakarna glacier, nearby glacier lakes, and mountain peaks. It is essential to visit this destination while trekking to the north base camp of Kanchenjunga.
Following breakfast, you will advance towards Kanchenjunga North base camp and proceed from Khambachen towards Lhonak. Before reaching Lhonak, you will stroll along the Ghunsa Khola riverside and go through the Ramtang village. The ancient Ramtang monastery in Ramtang village is a popular stop during treks.
During the journey from Khambachen to Lonak, you will pass through varied landscapes such as alpine meadows, alpine terrain, and moraines. You will also catch sight of yaks and mountain goats. After a 6-hour trek, you will arrive at Lonak, where you will be able to enjoy stunning views of Mera Glacier, Ramdang Glacier, and Kanchenjunga Glacier. You will be lodging at the Lhonak guest house for the night.
The most anticipated day of the journey is day ten, as it is when you will reach your final destination, Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Panhpema). You will start your journey early in the morning equipped with a headlamp and lunch. Trekkers particularly enjoy this section of the hike because the path offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes. The route from Lhonak to Pangpema is full of adventure, featuring rocky scenery and challenging terrain, but the journey is definitely worthwhile.
Arriving at Kanchenjunga Base Camp will immerse you in stunning snow-covered peaks, glaciers, and untouched alpine scenery. One of the impressive peaks is the northern slope of Mount Kanchenjunga, which reaches 8586 meters in height. Additionally, the Base Camp of Kanchenjunga offers delightful views of Kangbachen (7903 m), Ramtang Peak (6601 m), Taple Sikhar (6341 m), Nepal Chuli (6910 m), Kirat Chuli (7365 m), and other nearby peaks. Similarly, the Kanchenjunga, Pathivara, Kanchanjangha, and Ramdana glaciers will capture your attention.
Following an unforgettable day, you will come back to Lhonak for an overnight stay. Going back to Lhonak is included in your journey back as well. You will retrace your steps back to Base Camp on the same trail you originally followed. Your tenth day will consist of a total journey lasting 7-8 hours.
Following a tasty breakfast, you will start the descent from Lhonak. You will follow the identical path back as when you traveled to Kanchanjunga Base Camp. After trekking through Ramtang and Kambachen, you will reach Ghunsa, where you will stay overnight, following a 6-8 hour walk.
Following a tasty breakfast in Ghunsa, you will bid farewell to the village and begin hiking down to Amjilosa. After passing through Phale and Gyabla village, it will take 8-9 hours of walking to reach Amjilosa. Since the path is completely downhill, be mindful of your knees that could potentially sustain an injury. You will be spending the night at the Amjilosa Lodge.
Starting the day with breakfast in Amjilosa, you will head down to Sekathum following the familiar trail from the start of your journey. Hiking next to the Gunsa Khola and going through little villages will lead you to Sekathum in about 4-5 hours of trekking.
You will halt at Sekathum to obtain some fresh items. Once you are rejuvenated, you will step into your personal SUV. Driving from Sekathum to Taplejung in a jeep will take about 5-6 hours and offers beautiful views along the way. You will spend the night at the hotel in Sekathum.
The journey will end on the fourteenth day. We will collect you from Taplejung Hotel in the early morning and transfer you to Bhadrapur Airport. You will be flying for 45 minutes with beautiful views. While departing from Bhadrapur airport, you will bid farewell to the area but keep the memories from your trip.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we will collect you from the domestic airport and transfer you to your hotel. You can make use of the rest of the day by exploring your local surroundings.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is an exhilarating 14-day adventure designed for trekkers who wish to explore one of the most remote and pristine regions of Nepal. This trek takes you to the base of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, offering breathtaking views of its dazzling glaciers and towering peaks. Along the way, you’ll immerse yourself in the cultural diversity of the Limbu and Rai ethnic groups, experience the wilderness of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, and discover the rural landscape and villages of eastern Nepal.
Your journey begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll take a scenic flight to Bhadrapur. The 45-minute flight offers stunning aerial views of the diverse landscapes of Nepal. Upon arrival in Bhadrapur, you’ll embark on a Jeep drive to Fiddim or Taplejung, passing through beautiful settlements such as Birtamod, Illam, Jorpokhari, and Amarpur. This drive sets the stage for the adventure that lies ahead, as you start to feel the crisp mountain air and anticipate the journey to Kanchenjunga‘s north base camp.
The first trekking day takes you from Taplejung to Sekathum. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll set off on a drive through narrow, winding roads accompanied by the sounds of chirping birds. You’ll pass through lush forests and small settlements, giving you a glimpse into traditional Nepali life. The route spans along the Tamor River and crosses several bridges before reaching Sekathum, where you’ll spend the night.
From Sekathum, you’ll trek to Amjilosa. This part of the trek is adventurous, with steep ascents and descents, rocky paths, and suspension bridges over the Gunsa River. The journey takes you through rhododendron forests and alongside the river, offering stunning natural scenery. After a challenging day, you’ll reach Amjilosa and enjoy a well-deserved rest.
The next day, you’ll trek to Gyabla. The trail is both challenging and rewarding, as it takes you through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, where you may encounter unique flora and fauna, including the elusive red panda. You’ll cross suspension bridges over the Gunsa River and trek through dense forests before reaching Gyabla, a small village where you’ll spend the night.
Continuing your journey, you’ll trek to Ghunsa, a picturesque village known for its Tibetan culture and hospitality. The trail from Gyabla to Ghunsa includes steep ascents and descents, narrow trails, and lush forests. Along the way, you’ll pass through Phale, a small settlement known for its carpet factory. In Ghunsa, you’ll stay at a lodge with modern amenities, including an attached bathroom, bakery shop, and coffee station.
The sixth day is dedicated to acclimatization and exploration in Ghunsa. This day helps you adapt to the higher altitude and provides an opportunity to explore the village, interact with locals, and visit ancient Buddhist monasteries. You can also hike to nearby ridges to enjoy panoramic views of Kumbhakarna Peak (Jannu Peak).
After acclimatizing in Ghunsa, you’ll trek to Khambachen. The trail follows the Ghunsa Khola River and takes you through rhododendron and pine forests. You’ll encounter chortens and mani walls adorned with colorful prayer wheels, enhancing the spiritual aspect of your journey. The trek offers stunning views of several peaks, including Mount Jannu, Sobithongie, Phole Peak, Khabur, and Temachungi. After a 4-6 hour trek, you’ll reach Khambachen, where you’ll spend the night.
The following day includes a side trip to the Jannu viewpoint, also known as Faktanglung. This short hike offers spectacular views of Mount Jannu, the Kumbhakarna glacier, and surrounding glacier lakes. The Jannu viewpoint is a sacred site for the Kirat people and provides an unforgettable experience for trekkers.
From Khambachen, you’ll trek to Lhonak, passing through diverse landscapes such as alpine meadows, moraines, and rocky terrain. You’ll also visit the ancient Ramtang monastery in the Ramtang village. The trek offers glimpses of yaks, mountain goats, and stunning views of the Mera, Ramdang, and Kanchenjunga glaciers. After a 6-hour trek, you’ll reach Lhonak, where you’ll stay overnight.
The highlight of the trek is the journey to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. You’ll start early with a headlamp and packed lunch, trekking through rocky landscapes and rough terrain. Upon reaching the base camp, you’ll be surrounded by mesmerizing snow-capped peaks, pristine alpine landscapes, and several glaciers, including the north face of Mount Kanchenjunga. After spending time at the base camp, you’ll return to Lhonak for an overnight stay.
The return journey begins with a trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa, retracing your steps through Ramtang and Kambachen. After an overnight stay in Ghunsa, you’ll continue descending to Amjilosa, passing through Phale and Gyabla. The descent requires careful attention to avoid strain on your knees. Your final trekking day takes you from Amjilosa to Sekathum and then a Jeep drive to Taplejung. This marks the end of your trekking adventure, and you’ll spend the night in Taplejung.
On the last day, you’ll drive from Taplejung to Bhadrapur and take a scenic flight back to Kathmandu. As your plane takes off, you’ll bid farewell to the region but carry with you unforgettable memories of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transported to your hotel, where you can relax and reflect on your incredible journey.
