13 Days Gokyo Valley Trekking

The Gokyo Valley Trekking adventure is a 13-day journey through one of the most picturesque and culturally rich regions of Nepal. This trek, an excellent alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek, offers breathtaking views, encounters with the Sherpa culture, and the chance to explore the largest glacier in Nepal, the Ngozumba Glacier. Whether you’re an experienced trekker or new to high-altitude hiking, this itinerary promises an unforgettable experience filled with natural beauty, cultural insights, and a sense of accomplishment.

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative. A private car will then take you to your hotel in Kathmandu. The first evening will be spent discussing the trek and preparing for the adventure ahead, with a delicious dinner provided by the hotel.

The second day begins with an early breakfast before heading to the airport for a 45-minute flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Gokyo Valley. At 2,800 meters, Lukla offers stunning views and marks the starting point of your trek. After landing, you’ll embark on a trek to Phakding, a charming village situated at 2,610 meters. The day’s journey is relatively short, allowing you to acclimate to the altitude gradually. You’ll spend the night in a lodge, enjoying a meal and the serene surroundings.

On the third day, you’ll trek to Namche Bazaar, the bustling heart of the Khumbu region. The trail winds through pine forests along the Dudh Koshi River, eventually entering Sagarmatha National Park. After several hours of trekking, you’ll reach Namche Bazaar at 3,440 meters, where you’ll be greeted by stunning views and the vibrant atmosphere of this Sherpa town. You’ll spend the night in a hotel, resting and enjoying the local hospitality.

The fourth day is designated for acclimatization in Namche Bazaar. This vital rest day helps your body adjust to the higher altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. You can explore the town, visit local markets, or take a short hike to enjoy panoramic views of Everest and other peaks. Namche Bazaar offers various amenities, including government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, and restaurants, making it a comfortable place to acclimate.

On the fifth day, you’ll resume trekking, heading towards Phortse Thanga at 3,680 meters. The trail offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and a glimpse into the local Sherpa culture. You’ll pass through Khumjung before descending to the Dudh Koshi River and reaching Phortse Thanga. The day’s hike is filled with natural beauty and cultural landmarks, including a large Buddha image carved into a rock. You’ll spend the night in a hotel, enjoying the serene environment and the warm hospitality of the locals.

The sixth day takes you to Macherma, situated at 4,410 meters. This shorter trek is designed to help you acclimate further as you gain altitude. The trail winds through lush forests and offers spectacular views of both the greenery and the snow-capped peaks. You’ll spend the night in a guesthouse, resting and preparing for the higher altitudes ahead.

The day ends with an overnight stay in Phakding, where you’ll reflect on the journey and rest in preparation for the final trekking days.
