Itinerary

Day 1 Pick up at Kathmandu airport (1345meters).

You will land at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu. Our company personnel will be available at the airport’s arrival terminal.

A private vehicle will accompany you to your chosen hotel in Kathmandu, ideally in Thamel. You have no commitments for the rest of the day. Explore the streets of Thamel or stroll to Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Day 2 Fly from Kathmandu to Nepaljung to Juphal and trek to Shyanta (2520m)

Have a luxurious morning meal at the hotel. You will be taken to the domestic terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport.

Take a 60-minute flight heading west to the border town of Nepalgunj. After arrival, you will be guided to Nepalgunj airport’s waiting area, where you will remain until your upcoming flight to Juphal departs.

The flight lasts for 30 minutes and follows narrow gorges located behind the Dhaulagiri massifs. Arrive at Juphal airport and kickstart your trekking expedition.

The journey from Juphal to Shyanta involves crossing the Thuli Bheri River on a bridge and eventually arriving at Sulighat. The hike will continue upwards for the next 4 hours until you reach your campsite for the night at Shyanta.

Day 3 Trek to Jharana hotel (3110mtrs.)

Shyanta starts the third day of your trek with a steep climb. The path meanders alongside Phoksundo River, passing through several sub-tropical forests.

This section is quite gentle, with intermittent uphill and downhill sections in the river valley until you reach Chhopka(2838m). From Chhopka, continue straight to reach Sanduwa where the Phoksundo and Ringmo Rivers meet, passing through Rechi.

Amchi Hospital is located in Sanduwa. We track along the Phoksundo River on our way to the Jharana Hotel where we will camp for the night.

Day 4 Trek to Phoksundo Lake (3733m)

We move in a northern direction from Jharana Hotel towards the primary highlight of the journey, Phoksundo Lake. The part of the hike is enjoyable as it stays near the Phoksundo River.

The total elevation gain is more than 900 meters, with a slight drop from the highest point to reach Phoksundo Lake. A massive, tumbling waterfall is visible on the way to Ringmo village, near Suli Gad. Before reaching Ringmo, you will come across the usual Dolpali chorten.

Next, you reach the untouched Lake of Phoksundo, where we pitch our camp on the terrace at the southern tip of the Lake.

Day 5 Explore Day at Phoksundo Lake.

Shey Phoksundo Lake, located at an altitude of 3611m, is a mysterious freshwater lake with a deep blue color in Dolpa district. Located next to Ringmo village, this lake holds the title of being the deepest in Nepal, with a remarkable depth of 136 meters.

In Tibetan, Phoksundo means a lake that has three ends and is encircled by stones. We investigate Ringmo village close by, where Tshowa (Bon monastery) is located on the northern ridge of the Lake.

Day 6 Trek to Salla Ghari - (3640m)

We ascend the steep cliff next to Phoksundo Lake to access the lake’s northern side.

From this point forward, we will continue along the Phoksundo River, making our way up through the isolated highlands of the area. It takes a minimum of 6 hours to travel from Phoksundo to Salla Ghar.

The path runs alongside the river and offers occasional views of Mt. Kanjirowa (6883 meters). Upon reaching Sallaghari, we established a camp and stayed overnight at the location.

Day 7 Trek to Lar Tsa - (4120m)

Traveling from Salla Ghari to Lar Tsa is a simple journey, featuring occasional gentle and relaxed inclines. Many also refer to Lar Tsa as Kalgla Base Camp, which offers a campsite for climbers of Kagla. The journey from Salla Ghari to Lar Tsa takes 6 hours and follows the Phoksundo River.

Day 8 Trek to Shey Gompa (4160m) via Nangdalo-La pass (5110m)

Today, we trace our path along the Tuk Kyaksa River as we journey from Lar Tsa to Shey Gompa.

The journey is perilous, reaching its peak at the Nangdalo-La Pass at an elevation of 5110 meters. We leave in the early hours of the morning and continue on to traverse the mountain pass. The sight from the peak of the key is absolutely stunning.

The sight is truly amazing, with the horizon stretching far into the distance. We make a steep descent from the mountain pass and arrive at Shey Gompa in the evening. We assembled our camp at Shey Gompa.

Day 9 Rest day at Shey Gompa the crystal monastery.

Staying at Shey Gompa during the Upper Dolpo trek will be the most memorable experience. You will adjust to an elevation over 4000 meters and discover the treasures of Shey Gompa, which is also called Crystal Monastery.

Shey Gompa retains pre-Buddhist traditions and is believed to have originated in the 11th century. In addition to Shey Gompa, Crystal Mountain, located next to the Gompa, will also attract you.

You will be accommodated at an overnight camp located at Shey Gompa.

Day 10 Trek to Bhijer (3850m)

We leave Shey Gompa early to head towards Bhijer. The journey from Shey Gompa initially follows the course of Tartan River’s basin. Next, it continues to climb to the high plateau beyond Shey Gompa.

The path goes in an easterly direction for approximately 3 hours before it drops down to the village of Tora, located next to the Yangu River. We continue downward until we reach Tato village, which sits at an altitude of 3920 meters.

Once you pass Tato, you will arrive at Shyamling Gompa (4020m), another famous monastery in Dolpo. The Bhijer Valley is a one-hour walk away from this monastery. We established our temporary camp at Bhijer for the night.

Day 11 Trek to Saldang (3776m)

Bhijer is a village mostly populated by followers of Bon. We meander through the village in the morning before embarking on our journey.

Nesar monastery in Bhijer is well-known for its extensive history as a sacred prayer space in Buddhism. Today we will follow a route lined with Buddhist monuments.

The Lang Monastery is included in the list of notable places to visit on your journey to Saldang. Prior to your decline, you will cross over one of the tallest passes along the Nengla Pass trek (5368m).

Your path winds through Palding, a little village inhabited by Dolpali individuals. Saldang extends a warm welcome to Samye Choeling Monastery.

At the entrance. We will pass over the Panjyan River by Tora Samjin on our way to your campsite. Saldang continues to be a village with a high population density in the Dolpo region.

Day 12 Trek to Nisal Gaon (4500m)

On the twelfth day of your journey, you arrive at the high-altitude village of Nisal Gaon. After departing Saldang’s crowded settlement, we trace the path of the Nagaon River back to its source.

The path we take goes through Moran, Tiling, and Kigaon villages before reaching Tora Sumna and turning east. The journey from Saldang to Nisal Gaon takes about 5-6 hours. We established our camp for the night at Nisal Gaon.

Day 13 Trek to Shimengaon (3850m) via Khoma Gaon (4060m).

The section between Nisal Goan and Shimengaon is fairly straightforward. We go down through tiny dotted villages on the path.

The route expands as we see river valleys opening up ahead of us. We travel alongside the Panjyan River, passing through Khuma Gaon at an elevation of 4060 meters before arriving at Shimengoan by nightfall. Our camp was established at Shimengaon.

Day 14 Trek to Tinje village (4110m)

Today’s path keeps running next to the Panjyan River and offers a delightful view of the mountains.

We pass through Pu Gompa, Namyal, Targaon, and Phalwa before arriving at Tinje Village.

We walk along the foot of Rakaum Hill, tracing about half of its circumference. In the evening, we eventually made it to Tinje village after crossing the Nukdem Khola Bridge.

Day 15 Trek to Yak kharka (4868m)

Today, you will have a unique experience by taking a less traveled path. The traditional Upper Dolpo trail is followed up to Taraka Sundo on our journey.

Next, it involves a sharp zigzag climb to arrive at Yak Kharka. We ascend after following the Sulun River from Taraka Sundo. Villagers do not reside in the area and must be close to the local community.

Before we start climbing, we need to fetch water from the river. Yak Kharka is a 7-hour hike away, where we establish our camp.

Day 16 Trek to Dho Tarap (Crossing Chhoila pass-5051m)

Following a captivating evening at Yak Kharka, we make our way down to Dho Tarap. We ascend to 5051 meters at Chhoila Pass, then trace the Chhoila River to arrive at Dho Tarap by evening. This entire journey typically lasts between 4 to 5 hours in total.

We go through villages of Tyungyalphu, Tokyu, Kahakar, and Ghakar before we reach Dho and Tarap. As you journey to Dho Tarap, you will see different schools and facilities operated by NGOs. We pitched our camping tent at Dho Tarap for a night’s stay.

Day 17 Trek to Serkam (3623m)

A river runs near the village of Dho Tarap, guiding us for the day. Following the village, the Tarap River continues downstream until it meets the Phoksundo River at Sulighat.

We follow the Tarap River down and pass through Langa, Sisaul, Ghyamga, Toltol, and Nawarpani before reaching Serkam for our camping spot for the night.

Day 18 Trek to Tarakot - (2280m)

The journey from Serkam to Tarakot is fairly simple. Our exploration keeps tracking the descent of Tarap Khola through different Dolpali villages.

We travel past the well-known Loina Odar and Khanigaon before reaching the meeting point of Tarap Khola and Bharbung rivers, which then combines to form Thuli river.

We hike for an additional 2 hours to get to Tarakot, where we will establish our camp for the night.

The adventure begins upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where trekkers are greeted and transported to their hotel. The following day, an early flight takes participants to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal, where the trekking journey officially starts.
