We take a car early in the morning to Pokhara.
We drive to the end of the road at Nayapul, where we start our trek. After fifteen minutes of walking along the Modi Khola River’s bank, we arrive at Birethanti (1065m), a sizable community with many of stores and teahouses. From there, the trail follows the north bank of the Bhurungdi Khola as it passes through the settlement. The trail then gradually ascends the valley’s side to Hille, which is located at 1495 metres, and then makes a brief ascent to Tikedhunga, which is located at 1525 metres. Today is brief and easy enough to help us get acquainted to the experience of hiking in Nepal.
We depart Tikedunga after a filling breakfast, starting with a strenuous ascent to Ulleri. At 2070 metres, Ulleri is a sizable Magar settlement. The trail next makes its way to Banthanti at 2250 metres, climbing more gradually through lovely oak and rhododendron forests. From there, we walk up to 2460 metres, Nangethanti. We trek for another hour and reach Ghorepani at 2775 metres.
We get up extremely early today to walk the hour-long ascent to Poon Hill (3195m). This viewpoint offers an unhindered view of the sunrise over the high Himalayas, making for a spectacular sight. We take in the amazing sight for about forty minutes before heading back to Ghorepani for a much-needed breakfast. We depart for Tatopani after breakfast. At 2390 metres, the trail descends sharply to Chitre. The slopes are heavily terraced as the trail descends through Sikha. At 1980 metres, Sikha is a sizable settlement with stores and lodging; the trail then gently descends to Ghara at 1705 metres. You reach the Ghar Khola, where the trail crosses the river on a suspension bridge, after another hard 500-meter descent. After that, we ascend above the Kaligandaki River, cross it, and head north to Tatopani. The name Tato, which means “hot,” and Pani, which means “water,” came about because of the river’s hot springs.
The trek carries on up the Kali Gandaki gorge today. This is regarded as the deepest in the world because it is located between the two 8000-meter peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. From there, the trail ascends gradually to Dana at 1400 metres and continues to Rupse Chhahara at 1550 metres, where a breathtaking waterfall is seen. in 1935 metres, the trail crosses to the eastern bank of the river and arrives in Kopchepani. From there, it crosses again on a suspension bridge to return to the western bank. Ghasa, at 2080 metres, is only a short trek up from here. Before reaching Kalopani, which is at an elevation of 2560 metres, the trail continues to climb and passes through Lete, which is at 2470 metres. From Kalopani, we have amazing views of the Nilgiri peaks to the east.
Today’s journey begins with a crossing to the eastern bank of the river, which we will do twice more before reaching Larjung at 2560 metres. The walk continues a short distance to the picturesque, winding alleyways of Khobang village. We will then eat lunch at Tukuche, an old Thakali village located at 2590 metres. The trail heads up the Kali Gandaki after Tukuche. The gorge makes the landscape much more desolate and the breeze picks up. At 2665 metres, we continue on our way to Marpha by crossing a Tibetan refuge settlement and a research facility for horticulture. Marpha is a sizable Thakali village with a lot of great teahouses, yet it still has the usual whitewashed buildings, flat roofs, and small passageways. We shall go to a magnificent Nyingmapa Buddhist gompa there.
We ascend to Jomsom at 2713 metres by following the valley’s edge from Marpha. The administrative hub of the area, Jomsom is a sizable, vibrant community that houses the army base, the airport, a huge number of hotels, stores, banks, and government buildings. We cross the river to reach the eastern bank and continue walking to Eklai Bhatti, which is at an elevation of 2730 metres. From here, we take the riverside trail to Kagbeni, which is at an elevation of 2810 metres and is the northernmost village that can be visited without a permission in order to go on to Mustang. Kagbeni is located at the intersection of the Jhong Khola and the Kali Gandaki. The culture and kindness of the Tibetan people are abundant in this village.
After leaving Kagbeni, we ascend steeply up the Jhong Khola valley and then join the direct track to Muktinath at 3200m, right below Khingar. The trail continues from this point, climbing well above the Jhong Khola, to the impressive settlement of Jharkot, which is well worth exploring at 3500 metres. Here we stop for lunch and then proceed to Muktinath. The trail ascends as we leave Jharkot in order to reach Muktinath, which is our final objective at 3800 metres. When we first get to Ranipauwa, there are a lot of stores and teahouses. This is where we will spend the night. We shall be rewarded with the real Muktinath religious site after climbing the hill for ten minutes; this location is kept devoid of lodging facilities and camping areas. Muktinath is a Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage site. Both Tibetan traders and sadhus from the furthest south of India can be seen there. Within a grove of trees lies a shrine that houses the Vishnu temple of Jwalamai as well as a Buddhist gompa. Nearby, an ancient temple protects a spring and natural gas jets that supply Muktinath’s renowned eternal flame. The earth, water, and fire combination is what gives Muktinath its immense religious significance.
We walk back to Jomsom, spend the night there, and prepare our belongings for our trip back.
After our 20-minute picturesque trip from Jomsom to Pokhara, we return to Kathmandu via air.
