The first leg of your three-day climb to Everest Base Camp is an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. As you soar over the spectacular Himalayan peaks and receive glimpses of breathtaking landscapes, the scenic flight itself is an adventure. The approximate distance covered by the 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is 13 km. You can feel the excitement rising as soon as you land at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, the entry point to the Everest region.

After reaching Lukla, the hike formally begins. Initially, the trail descends past quaint towns, passing Mani walls, little stupas, and prayer flags that imbue the journey with a spiritual quality. Beautiful views of the surrounding hills and the Dudh Kosi River Valley may be seen along the walk. After traversing the breathtaking scenery, you’ll arrive in Phakding, a charming settlement at an elevation of about 8,563 feet (2,610 metres).

Depending on your pace, you will cover about 8 kilometres on the first day and finish the walk in 3–4 hours. The descent is rather gentle and serves as an excellent warm-up for the next few days. The Dudh Kosi River is crossed by suspension bridges along the route, which gives the walk an extra sense of adventure.

With its lush forests, rhododendron blossoms (depending on the season), and sporadic views of distant snow-capped peaks, today’s hike is breathtakingly beautiful. Phakding is a peaceful place to spend the night, located by the banks of the Dudh Kosi River. You can spend a pleasant time in a teahouse, experiencing the cosiness of traditional Sherpa hospitality.
