The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is an exhilarating 14-day adventure designed for trekkers who wish to explore one of the most remote and pristine regions of Nepal. This trek takes you to the base of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, offering breathtaking views of its dazzling glaciers and towering peaks. Along the way, you’ll immerse yourself in the cultural diversity of the Limbu and Rai ethnic groups, experience the wilderness of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, and discover the rural landscape and villages of eastern Nepal.
Your journey begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll take a scenic flight to Bhadrapur. The 45-minute flight offers stunning aerial views of the diverse landscapes of Nepal. Upon arrival in Bhadrapur, you’ll embark on a Jeep drive to Fiddim or Taplejung, passing through beautiful settlements such as Birtamod, Illam, Jorpokhari, and Amarpur. This drive sets the stage for the adventure that lies ahead, as you start to feel the crisp mountain air and anticipate the journey to Kanchenjunga‘s north base camp.
The first trekking day takes you from Taplejung to Sekathum. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll set off on a drive through narrow, winding roads accompanied by the sounds of chirping birds. You’ll pass through lush forests and small settlements, giving you a glimpse into traditional Nepali life. The route spans along the Tamor River and crosses several bridges before reaching Sekathum, where you’ll spend the night.
From Sekathum, you’ll trek to Amjilosa. This part of the trek is adventurous, with steep ascents and descents, rocky paths, and suspension bridges over the Gunsa River. The journey takes you through rhododendron forests and alongside the river, offering stunning natural scenery. After a challenging day, you’ll reach Amjilosa and enjoy a well-deserved rest.
The next day, you’ll trek to Gyabla. The trail is both challenging and rewarding, as it takes you through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, where you may encounter unique flora and fauna, including the elusive red panda. You’ll cross suspension bridges over the Gunsa River and trek through dense forests before reaching Gyabla, a small village where you’ll spend the night.
Continuing your journey, you’ll trek to Ghunsa, a picturesque village known for its Tibetan culture and hospitality. The trail from Gyabla to Ghunsa includes steep ascents and descents, narrow trails, and lush forests. Along the way, you’ll pass through Phale, a small settlement known for its carpet factory. In Ghunsa, you’ll stay at a lodge with modern amenities, including an attached bathroom, bakery shop, and coffee station.
The sixth day is dedicated to acclimatization and exploration in Ghunsa. This day helps you adapt to the higher altitude and provides an opportunity to explore the village, interact with locals, and visit ancient Buddhist monasteries. You can also hike to nearby ridges to enjoy panoramic views of Kumbhakarna Peak (Jannu Peak).
After acclimatizing in Ghunsa, you’ll trek to Khambachen. The trail follows the Ghunsa Khola River and takes you through rhododendron and pine forests. You’ll encounter chortens and mani walls adorned with colorful prayer wheels, enhancing the spiritual aspect of your journey. The trek offers stunning views of several peaks, including Mount Jannu, Sobithongie, Phole Peak, Khabur, and Temachungi. After a 4-6 hour trek, you’ll reach Khambachen, where you’ll spend the night.
The following day includes a side trip to the Jannu viewpoint, also known as Faktanglung. This short hike offers spectacular views of Mount Jannu, the Kumbhakarna glacier, and surrounding glacier lakes. The Jannu viewpoint is a sacred site for the Kirat people and provides an unforgettable experience for trekkers.
From Khambachen, you’ll trek to Lhonak, passing through diverse landscapes such as alpine meadows, moraines, and rocky terrain. You’ll also visit the ancient Ramtang monastery in the Ramtang village. The trek offers glimpses of yaks, mountain goats, and stunning views of the Mera, Ramdang, and Kanchenjunga glaciers. After a 6-hour trek, you’ll reach Lhonak, where you’ll stay overnight.
The highlight of the trek is the journey to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. You’ll start early with a headlamp and packed lunch, trekking through rocky landscapes and rough terrain. Upon reaching the base camp, you’ll be surrounded by mesmerizing snow-capped peaks, pristine alpine landscapes, and several glaciers, including the north face of Mount Kanchenjunga. After spending time at the base camp, you’ll return to Lhonak for an overnight stay.
The return journey begins with a trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa, retracing your steps through Ramtang and Kambachen. After an overnight stay in Ghunsa, you’ll continue descending to Amjilosa, passing through Phale and Gyabla. The descent requires careful attention to avoid strain on your knees. Your final trekking day takes you from Amjilosa to Sekathum and then a Jeep drive to Taplejung. This marks the end of your trekking adventure, and you’ll spend the night in Taplejung.
On the last day, you’ll drive from Taplejung to Bhadrapur and take a scenic flight back to Kathmandu. As your plane takes off, you’ll bid farewell to the region but carry with you unforgettable memories of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transported to your hotel, where you can relax and reflect on your incredible journey.
