The Chola Pass Trekking is an 18-day adventure that provides an immersive experience of the stunning landscapes and cultural richness of the Everest region. Known as the Everest Circuit Trekking, this journey combines the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Valley trekking routes, offering trekkers the chance to visit some of the most iconic viewpoints in the region, including Everest Base Camp, Kalapathar, Gokyo Ri, and the Chola Pass itself. This trek lies within the UNESCO-listed Sagarmatha National Park, a testament to its natural and cultural significance. Group joins are available for 2024 and 2025, making it an excellent opportunity for adventure seekers.
The trek begins with an arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where trekkers are greeted and transported to their hotel. This first day is dedicated to settling in and acclimating to the new environment. Depending on the time of arrival, there is an option to explore the city or simply rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.
On the second day, an early morning flight takes the group from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small town nestled in the mountains. This 45-minute flight offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape. Upon landing in Lukla, the trek officially begins with a three-hour hike to Phakding, where trekkers spend the night in a local lodge or guest house.
The journey from Phakding to Namche Bazaar on the third day involves a five-hour trek, passing through Jorshalle and crossing the Dudhkoshi River multiple times. The route offers the first glimpses of Mount Everest, setting the stage for the adventures to come. Namche Bazaar, a bustling hub for trekkers and Sherpa people, serves as the destination for the night.
Day four is dedicated to acclimatization in Namche Bazaar, which sits at an elevation of 3,800 meters. Trekkers can explore local attractions such as the Khumjung Monastery and the Sagarmatha National Park Museum. These excursions not only provide cultural insights but also help with altitude adjustment, an essential aspect of high-altitude trekking.
The trek continues on the fifth day from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche, a journey that takes approximately five hours. Along the way, trekkers descend to Phortse, cross a suspension bridge, and ascend through rhododendron and pine forests to reach Tengboche. The day concludes with a visit to the famous Tengboche Monastery, a spiritual highlight of the trek.
From Tengboche, the route leads to Dingboche on the sixth day, a four to five-hour trek that offers views of Mount Amadablam and passes through the villages of Pangboche and Somare. Dingboche, located at 4,410 meters, provides another opportunity for acclimatization and rest.
On the seventh day, the trek heads to Lobuche, situated at 4,950 meters. This five-hour hike begins with a gentle walk through yak pastures and becomes more challenging as it approaches the Khumbu Glacier. After a lunch break at Thukla Lodge, trekkers cross the Thukla Pass, a steep but rewarding ascent, before reaching Lobuche for the night.
The eighth day is a significant milestone as trekkers reach Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp. This day involves approximately eight hours of hiking, including a challenging walk over glaciers. Upon reaching Gorakshep, trekkers leave their bags and continue to Everest Base Camp. After celebrating this achievement, they return to Gorakshep for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day nine begins with an early morning hike to Kalapathar, the highest viewpoint of the trek at 5,545 meters. Trekkers witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas, including Mount Everest. After descending to Gorakshep for breakfast, the trek continues to Dzongla, where the group spends the night.
Crossing the Chola Pass on the tenth day is one of the trek’s most challenging yet rewarding experiences. Starting early in the morning, trekkers ascend to the pass at 5,420 meters, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The descent leads to Thangnang, where trekkers rest for the night.
The eleventh day takes the group to Gokyo Lake via the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal. This three to four-hour trek offers stunning views of blue ice formations and the towering Mount Cho Oyu. Upon reaching Gokyo, trekkers can relax and enjoy the serene beauty of the lake.
Day twelve includes an ascent to Gokyo Ri, another spectacular viewpoint at 5,360 meters. From the summit, trekkers can see a panorama of peaks including Everest, Makalu, Nuptse, and Lhotse. After descending, the rest of the day is free to explore the Gokyo Valley and its surrounding lakes.
The descent continues on the thirteenth day, with a five-hour trek from Gokyo to Dole. This part of the journey offers opportunities to spot Himalayan wildlife such as the Himalayan Thar and blue sheep. Trekkers spend the night in Dole, a village at 4,040 meters.
On the fourteenth day, the trek leads to Manjo, passing through Khumjung and Namche Bazaar. This five-hour trek provides a chance to reflect on the journey while enjoying the reverse views of Mount Everest and other peaks. The group spends the night in Manjo.
The fifteenth day involves a four-hour trek from Manjo to Lukla, passing through Phakding, Ghat, and Chhuplung. Upon reaching Lukla, trekkers can celebrate the completion of their trekking adventure with an overnight stay in a local hotel or resort.
Day sixteen marks the return to Kathmandu with a 45-minute flight from Lukla. Upon arrival, trekkers are transported to their hotel, where they can relax and enjoy the comforts of the city.
The seventeenth day is free for shopping or sightseeing in Kathmandu. Trekkers have the option to explore the historic Patan Durbar Square or simply enjoy the day at their leisure.
The final day, day eighteen, concludes with a departure from Kathmandu. After breakfast, trekkers are transported to Tribhuvan International Airport for their onward journey, marking the end of an unforgettable trekking adventure.
This 18-day Chola Pass Trekking adventure includes various services such as airport pick-up and drop-off, meals during the trek, accommodation in guest houses and hotels, experienced guides, necessary permits, and flight tickets from Kathmandu to Lukla and back.
