Embark on an unforgettable journey with the Kang La Pass Trek, an extraordinary extension of the classic Annapurna Circuit. This 20-day adventure takes you deep into the remote and culturally rich Nar Phu Valley, offering a unique blend of challenging high-altitude trekking and immersive cultural experiences. Starting and ending in Kathmandu, this trek offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, ancient Tibetan-influenced villages, and the thrill of crossing the Kang La Pass at an elevation of 5,306 meters (17,408 feet).

Your adventure begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative from Roiels Travel and transferred to your hotel. Kathmandu is a city steeped in history and culture, offering a fascinating introduction to Nepal. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner and a detailed briefing about the trek, providing you with essential information and an opportunity to meet your fellow trekkers.

The next day, you embark on a scenic drive to Besisahar, the starting point of the trek. The drive offers a glimpse of Nepal’s diverse landscapes, from bustling towns to serene countryside. From Besisahar, you begin your trek with a gentle walk to Bhulbhule, passing through terraced fields and small villages. This initial leg of the journey provides a taste of the rural charm and natural beauty that characterizes the Annapurna region.

As you continue your trek, the trail takes you through lush forests along the Marsyangdi River, passing beautiful waterfalls and traditional stone houses. Reaching the village of Jagat, known for its unique architecture, you start to experience the cultural diversity of the region. The trek to Dharapani introduces you to a mix of Tibetan and Nepalese cultures, as you pass through rhododendron forests and cross suspension bridges over roaring rivers.

At Koto, the trail diverges from the main Annapurna Circuit, leading you into the less-explored Nar Phu Valley. This part of the trek is marked by narrow canyons, rugged landscapes, and stunning waterfalls. Trekking to Meta, you will encounter the first signs of the valley’s Tibetan-influenced culture. As you ascend to Phu Gaon, a medieval village with breathtaking mountain views, you are immersed in the region’s ancient traditions and spirituality.

Kang La Pass Trek (Annapurna Circuit Extension)

Acclimatization is crucial at these altitudes, and a day in Phu Gaon allows you to explore the village and visit the Tashi Lhakhang Monastery, enhancing your understanding of the local culture while preparing your body for higher elevations. Continuing to Nar, another ancient village, you have another day for acclimatization, with opportunities to hike to nearby monasteries and viewpoints, enriching your cultural experience.

The trek’s highlight is the crossing of Kang La Pass. Starting early in the morning, you will ascend to the pass, where you are rewarded with panoramic views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. The descent to Ngawal is equally spectacular, as you rejoin the main Annapurna Circuit trail. From Ngawal, the trek to Manang offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, with an additional acclimatization day to ensure your well-being.

The journey continues to Yak Kharka, where alpine pastures and juniper forests dominate the landscape. The gradual ascent offers beautiful views of the surrounding peaks. As you approach Thorong Phedi, the base camp for crossing Thorong La Pass, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging, but the anticipation of crossing one of the highest trekking passes in the world keeps your spirits high.

Crossing Thorong La Pass is a monumental achievement, with breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from the pass. The descent to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, adds a spiritual dimension to your trek. Visiting the Muktinath Temple and experiencing its unique atmosphere is a profound experience.

From Muktinath, the trail leads you down the Kali Gandaki Valley to the charming village of Marpha, known for its apple orchards and traditional architecture. The journey to Tatopani, with its natural hot springs, provides a relaxing and rejuvenating experience after days of trekking. Soaking in the hot springs is a perfect way to ease the muscles and reflect on the incredible journey.

The final leg of the trek takes you to Pokhara, a beautiful lakeside city, where you can relax and explore its many attractions. The drive back to Kathmandu offers a scenic conclusion to your adventure, giving you time to reflect on the memories and experiences of the past 20 days.
