Lauri Binayak Pass Trekking, also known as Gosainkunda Trekking, is a spectacular journey that takes trekkers through the magnificent landscapes of the Langtang region, nestled in the northeast of the Kathmandu Valley. This trek is a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and mythological significance. It offers an opportunity to explore the pristine Gosaikunda Lake, ancient monasteries, dense forests, and the vibrant culture of the Tamang people. The Lauri Binayak Pass Trekking is an off-the-beaten-path adventure, perfect for those seeking a less crowded and more intimate trekking experience.
The adventure starts with your arrival in Kathmandu, where you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. The next day, after a hearty breakfast, a scenic drive takes you to Syabrubesi, the gateway to the Langtang region. The journey offers breathtaking views of the Trishuli River, lush green hills, and terraced farmlands. Syabrubesi, at an altitude of 1466 meters, serves as the starting point for the trek.
From Syabrubesi, the trek begins with a gradual ascent through the beautiful Langtang Valley. The trail winds through dense forests of bamboo, oak, and rhododendron, offering a chance to spot wildlife such as red pandas, monkeys, and various bird species. The day’s trek ends at the Lama Hotel, situated at 2410 meters. This quaint settlement is nestled amidst the forest, providing a serene and tranquil atmosphere for trekkers.
The next leg of the journey takes you from the Lama Hotel to Langtang Village. The trail gradually climbs through lush forests, opening up to the wide valley with stunning views of snow-capped peaks. Langtang Village, at 3430 meters, is a traditional Tamang settlement that was heavily affected by the 2015 earthquake but has since been rebuilt. Here, you can explore the village, visit the local cheese factory, and interact with the friendly locals.
From Langtang Village, the trek continues to Kyanjin Gompa, a significant Buddhist monastery located at 3830 meters. The trail offers spectacular views of Langtang Lirung and other surrounding peaks. Upon reaching Kyanjin Gompa, trekkers can explore the monastery, visit the local cheese factory, and enjoy the panoramic views. A day hike to Kyanjin Ri (4773 meters) is highly recommended for an unparalleled view of the Langtang Himalayas and the glaciers.
Leaving Kyanjin Gompa, the trek ascends towards the sacred Gosaikunda Lake. The trail passes through alpine meadows and rugged terrain, eventually reaching the lake at an altitude of 4380 meters. Gosaikunda is a significant pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, believed to have been created by Lord Shiva to quench his thirst after consuming poison. The lake and its surroundings are adorned with several smaller lakes and offer a serene and spiritual ambiance. Every August, during the Janai Purnima festival, pilgrims from all over Nepal and beyond come to pay homage and take a holy dip in the lake’s icy waters.
The trek then leads to the Lauribinayak Pass, standing at 4610 meters. This high mountain pass offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lhakpa, and Ganesh Himal. The challenging ascent is rewarded with the sense of accomplishment and the stunning panoramic views from the top. Descending from the pass, the trail winds down through rocky terrain and alpine forests, leading to the settlement of Ghopte.
From Ghopte, the trek continues through dense forests of pine and rhododendron, with occasional glimpses of the snow-capped peaks. The trail passes through the village of Thadepati, offering spectacular views of the Helambu region. The day ends at Kutumsang, a small village at 2470 meters, where trekkers can rest and rejuvenate amidst the serene surroundings.
The penultimate day of the trek takes you from Kutumsang to Chisapani, passing through beautiful forests and terraced fields. Chisapani, located at 2215 meters, offers stunning views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. From here, the final day’s trek descends to Sundarijal, passing through the Shivapuri National Park. A short drive from Sundarijal brings you back to Kathmandu, where you can relax and reflect on your incredible journey.
